Science Mission Task 3.3 Mesozooplankton Abundance
The McLane Zooplankton Sampler (ZPS) (Figure 1) was deployed at the PAP site on cruise D341
in July 2009 for a period of 19 days deployment on the fixed-point IODA mooring (LMGEM and CPPM )
at 40m depth (incorporated less than 2m below the CTD).
The deployment lasted 19 days during which time the ZPS sampled twice a day (midnight and noon)
totalling 38 samples.
Task definition
A commercially available device to measure autonomously the abundance and biomass of mesozooplankton (>200µm) has recently become available (McLane Inc) with a depth capability of 5000m. This will be deployed firstly at the PAP site and then subsequently at one of the Mediterranean observatories. The samples collected will be analysed and the data combined and compared with data currently obtained on acoustic backscatter derived from ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) but which have not been adequately worked on. There are a number of components to this work:
- Shallow water trials comparing samples collected using autonomous sampler and traditional zooplankton nets
- Development of techniques to process existing and future ADCP data
- Deployment at observatories of zooplankton sampler and ADCP for prolonged period (several months).
- Interpretation and intercomparison.
Output: Temporal variability in abundance and biomass of zooplankton as determined optically and acoustically.
